“I just wanted to say thank you for Sunday's retreat.
It was marvelous, and I am so thrilled that that kind of workshop took place
right here in our community!” This was typical of the reactions of some twenty Jewish participants in a unique Passover Retreat held on Sunday, April 2, at the Collaborative Center in Narragansett. Sponsored and organized by the Rhode Island Center for Jewish Healing, the all-day event attracted attendees from as far north as Norton, Ma, and from a broad representation of communities in greater Rhode Island, including Cumberland, Seekonk, Barrington, Providence, Pawtucket, Jamestown, Warwick, North Kingstown and Wakefield. The leader of the retreat, Julie Leavitt-Kutzen, who
teaches at the Eilat-Chayyim retreat in New York, presented an unconventional
array of approaches and exercises intended to open the members of the group to
their individual struggles for emotional and personal freedom, as a prelude to
celebrating the liberation of the Jewish people from Egypt. People were
encouraged to speak openly about their personal journey through life, and shared
niggunim (songs) and practiced silent meditation, in order to reflect deeply on
these questions. In perfect spring-like weather, the group was able to experience the beauty of a walking meditation at waterside and in the woods, and to sit in the sun as they shared their personal prayers chavurot-style (with partners). Earlier in the day Leavitt-Kutzen conducted a bibliodrama, where participants chose roles from the story of the crossing of the Red Sea which they felt personally compelling -– from the wall of water, to Moses, to Miriam, to the Pillar of Cloud and others.
