RETREAT EXPLORES TESHUVA THROUGH TEACHING AND SONG

On Sunday September 10 the RI Center for Jewish Healing held its Rosh Hashanah retreat. There was a turnout of over 20 attendees. "This level of support will make it possible over time to continue to bring accessible, spiritual experiences to the RI Jewish community," said Chaim Brown, one of the Center's three directors..

The retreat's teacher was Rabbi Andrea Cohen-Kiener of P'nai Or in Hartford, Ct. Rabbi Kiener is also a frequent teacher at the spiritual retreat Elat Chayyim in rural Connecticut (the retreat recently moved from New York). The attendees learned new ways to think about teshuva -- repentance, return -- in preparation for Rosh Hashanah. Rabbi Kiener took them through exercises for reaching a place of forgiveness both of themselves and others and drew a connection with kabbalah and the sephirot. All spoke their feelings and sang together as a group. "It was really special learning within a warm community", said Janice Dexter-Ganek, a member of Agudas Achim and another of the Center's directors.

The retreat took place in the Brown Hillel building. "With the light streaming into the chapel and a fine view of the garden just outside, it was just a wonderful environment for our work", said director Michael Mizrahi.
